User Reviews about IRIS Pet Carrier for Dog or Cat - Tan

This pet carrier looks just like a picnic basket. When I brought my cat to the groomer to have her nails cut, the groomers thought the basket was very cute. One said that the cat looked adorable sitting in it. It was easy enough to get the cat inside it. It's a top-loader. It has a small storage area inside the lid for snacks or toys.
It has a comfortable mat inside the carrier. My cat weighs 14 pounds. That is as heavy as it can hold, in my opinion. If your pet weighs 15 or more pounds I'd get something more sturdy. -- Picnic Basket carrier
Everywhere I go people stop me and ask "Is that a cat carrier?" and I tell them "Yes and I got it on Amazon.com." So easy to use, just open, plop kitty in and close it real fast. There's a compartment for bills or bus pass or whatever. Then the half that comes up is just enough room to let their head pook out if they are nervous about where they are going or you can stick your arm in and pet them. So it is very comforting for both of you. I love this carrier. It is functional and affordable. -- Rock star treatment
LOVE this carrier. Have gotten lots of compliments on it, but more importantly, it is easy to get my pet into and out of! Especially when it's a vet visit. Sturdy and easy to carry! -- GREAT Carrier
I love this basket. It's got PLENTY of space for my rabbit. (I think you could fit a large breed rabbit, average size ferret, average size house cat, or very small dog in it.) I can tell it ventilates well because it was shipped in very hot weather, so when I opened it I could feel all the hot air in it. After closing it again and setting it down for a minute to glance at the instructions (which I'll get to in a minute), it was already cool when I opened it again. I know my bunny will adore it.

Unfortunately, despite being sold on the US Amazon site, in English, by a company calling itself "Iris USA" which also has an English website marketing to the USA, it is very obviously of Japanese make. Now, I don't have a problem with that on it's own. I work for an anime & Japanese culture convention, and I'm passingly familiar with how huge the pet amenities industry is in Japan. I trust them to make a great product. HOWEVER...

There is but one sheet of instructions. It is entirely in Japanese. Well, "entirely" may not be the right word. There is one bit of English. And that is the part at the bottom that says "Made in China." *sigh* Again, I wouldn't care so much, since it's very easy and obvious to use, but there is a big fat paragraph at the bottom with a warning symbol next to it (triangle with an "!" in it). I would really like to know what the potential hazards are to my pet. I've checked everything I could think of (there's nothing to pop loose, there's nothing to choke on, fibers do not pull out of the included rug), so it's possible that the paragraph just says things like "don't leave animal in for long hours," "do not leave in hot car," "do not leave loose in moving vehicle," "do not strap to top of vehicle," etc. etc. It's too much kanji for my Japanese-speaking friends to translate for me. ( [...] )

So, I went to the company's website, even checking the product list first to make sure it was the right company and website, and used their contact page to send a polite e-mail sharing my concern (of course I was polite; I wanted answers!), but they never got back to me, and that was about a month ago. Since I can't find anything wrong with it, I've decided to use it anyway, and just keep an eye on my beloved rabbit (which a good owner should do anyway, no matter what the carrier), but I wish this company would do more to reassure its pet-loving English consumers. :(

So, long story short, I can only assure you that this LOOKS like a good product, but there could be dangers I simply haven't learned of yet, on account of not knowing anyone who can translate kanji. -- Cute, but no English
